Why see an Osteopath? What do they do?

Google “back pain” and you will find a multitude of Physio’s and Chiro’s, but not as many Osteopaths.

Why is that? Well, firstly, there are over 27,000 registered physiotherapists, almost 5,000 chiropractors, but only 2,000 registered Osteopaths in Australia. We are however, the fastest growing allied health profession in Australia! We study hard for 5 years at university, and hold a Bachelor of Clinical Science, and a Masters in Health Science.

At Chadstone Region Osteopathy, we allow the time to take a detailed history, and thorough treatment, as well as teaching effective self-management and prevention solutions. For a new consult, we allow 60 minutes, which is up to twice as long as other practitioners. Any follow-up appointments, if required, are booked into 30 minute time slots. (Book online here)

This means you don’t get rushed when telling your story, then pushed out the door.

Osteopaths treat using a combination of massage, stretching, joint mobilising, manipulation (“cracking”), and exercise rehabilitation. At Chadstone Region Osteopathy, we have completed additional training into trigger point dry needling, and chronic pain education.

All treatments are tailored to each individual patient’s needs, and can be incredibly gentle and relaxing, through to very firm depending on your requirements.

What kinds of back pain do Osteopaths see?

We see everything, ranging from sudden acute sprains and spasms, through to chronic debilitating life-long back pain.

Some examples of common types of back pain that present to osteopaths are:

  • lumbar / pelvic muscle strains
  • facet joint or ligament sprains
  • rib joint sprains
  • invertertebral disc injuries
  • sciatica and nerve pain (burning, tingling etc)
  • osteoarthritis / degenerative disc disease
  • postural strains
  • scoliosis
  • repetitive strain injuries
  • sports and workplace injuries
  • congenital issues – spina bifida, spondylolisthesis
  • sacroiliac / pelvic girdle pain
  • stiffness and aches

All back pain cases are examined and treated individually. Injuries often cause damage to multiple tissues, which is why we allow plenty of time to assess you fully.

Our Osteopaths can organise imaging or diagnostic tests (if necessary!), and you do not require a referral from a GP to come and see us. We treat WorkCover, TAC, and DVA claims, as well as accepting Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management Plans.

How does Osteopathy help back pain?

Osteopaths use hands-on manual therapy to help normalise muscle tone, and joint range of motion. Osteopaths may help back pain using things such as massage, stretching, manipulation etc. We also use exercises to help decrease stiffness, spasm, and avoidance, and eventually increasing coordination, strength, and reduce risk of reinjury.

We will also teach you ways to treat yourself! We will help you get back in control of your body, and good management and prevention is always better than a cure!

Joints that are stiff or pinching, muscles that are spasming or are constantly tight, all can be assisted by osteopathic treatment. Osteopathy may help get more circulation to damaged tissues, as well as increasing lymphatic drainage – aiming to reduce swelling, soreness, and recovery time. Chronic or recurrent issues can be improved by learning more efficient movement patterns, and eliminating muscle imbalances.
