Neck Pain & Headache Assessment | Chadstone Region Osteopathy

Neck pain and headaches are incredibly common,
but that doesn’t mean you have to just put up with them.

Frequent headaches. A neck that feels tight or stiff most days. Pain that slowly builds as the day goes on. If this sounds familiar, it might be time to look into it properly.

It’s More Than Just Tension.
It’s Affecting Your Whole Day.

Neck pain and headaches are among the most common things we see – and also among the most overlooked.

You wake up with a stiff and sore neck and a dull headache before the day has even started
You get headaches behind your eyes or at the base of your skull – sometimes spreading forward
You might feel sore and tight in your jaw or temples, and tension behind your shoulder blades or over your shoulders
Your neck pain or headache sometimes has nausea and fatigue associated with it.
Migraines wipe out an entire day. You’re managing them, but never really getting on top of them
Your neck clicks, feels restricted, or you’ve noticed you can’t turn your head as freely as you used to, making things like driving difficult

One thing we do know is that headaches don’t all come from the same place
Understanding what’s driving yours – whether it’s your neck joints, your posture, your jaw, your upper back, stress or something else – is often the first step toward actually managing it better.

We Look at the Whole Picture – Not Just Where It Hurts

When it comes to neck pain and headaches, the source isn’t always obvious. Our osteopaths assess the neck, upper back, shoulder girdle, jaw, and posture as a whole system. We’re also skilled in understanding the influence of lifestyle factors – stress, sleep, hydration etc – because putting together the whole picture is often where answers show up.

One of the most important steps with recurring headaches is working out what’s actually driving them. Many headaches have physical contributors – often involving the neck, surrounding muscles, or daily habits – and these can frequently be managed effectively with the type of conservative care that we provide. Occasionally headaches can signal something that needs medical assessment, and part of our role is recognising when that’s the case and helping you access the right care quickly.

We’re not here to chase your appointments.
If after your assessment we think you’d be better served by a GP, neurologist, or another specialist, we’ll tell you clearly. Our goal is to get you the right help – not to keep you coming back unnecessarily.

We Take Headaches Seriously

Too often, people are told their headaches are “just stress” and sent away with advice to relax. Whilst stress may be a cause of headaches, we know that it can feel concerning to be dismissed without thorough assessment. We provide a thorough physical assessment to check the relevant body structures (muscles, ligaments, joints), check nerve function and talk to you about any lifestyle influences over your pain, such as stress, hydration, sleep, jaw clenching and others.

Chadstone Region Osteopathy team

We’re your local osteopaths in the Chadstone area – not a corporate clinic. When you come in, you’ll see a qualified, AHPRA-registered practitioner who takes the time to actually listen, explain what they find, and work with you on a sensible plan.

Not All Headaches Are the Same

Different types of head pain have different origins. Here’s what osteopaths can help assess and, in many cases, manage.

Cervicogenic Headaches

These originate from the joints, muscles, and structures of the neck. They’re often felt behind the eye, across the forehead, or at the base of the skull. Physical assessment can identify restricted joints and tight muscles that may be contributing – and these often respond well to hands-on osteopathic treatment and home care advice.

Tension-Type Headaches

Often linked to sustained posture, prolonged screen time, upper back tension, and stress. Osteopaths assess the neck, upper back, shoulder girdle, and jaw as contributing regions. Many people with tension headaches notice meaningful improvement when these areas are appropriately addressed.

Migraine

Migraine is a complex neurological condition – we’re clear about what we can and can’t help with. What we can assess is whether neck stiffness, muscle tension, stress or other lifestyle factors are contributing to your migraine frequency or severity. If we think you’d benefit from a neurologist or GP review, we’ll say so.

Neck Pain & Stiffness

Restricted movement, clicking, aching, or pain spreading into the shoulder or arm are common features of neck pain. Our osteopaths assess joint movement, muscle function, nerve sensitivity and overall movement patterns to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and what a sensible plan for improvement looks like.

Arthritis and degeneration

Neck and cervical arthritis or degeneration is common and can be painful. Our Osteopaths are experienced in assessing stiff necks associated with arthritis, and using hands-on treatment and gentle exercise to assist with improving mobility and decreasing pain.

Here’s Exactly What to Expect

No surprises. No jargon. Just a clear, thorough process from start to finish.

01
Your First Appointment (45 minutes)
We start by understanding your history – when it started, what triggers it, what helps, your daily routine and screen habits. Then a physical assessment: neck mobility, upper back, posture, and neurological checks where relevant. We explain everything we find in plain English.
02
Honest Conversation About Next Steps
We’ll share what we think is going on and what we may be able to help with. We’ll give you a realistic sense of how many sessions to expect – based on your history and what we find, not a one-size-fits-all package. If we think you’d be better served by a GP, neurologist, or other specialist, we’ll tell you directly.
03
Hands-On Treatment
Soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, and muscle energy techniques – focused on the neck, upper back, and surrounding structures. We work with you, not on you. Treatment is adjusted to your comfort at every stage.
04
Self-Management & Home Support
Postural advice, ergonomic tips, and simple exercises tailored to your situation. The aim is to give you tools to keep improving between visits – and reduce reliance on pain relief over time. Transparent pricing, no hidden packages.

Let’s Be Upfront About Who We Can Help

We’re not the right fit for everyone – and we’d rather you know that upfront.

βœ“ This may be worth exploring if…

  • Your headaches or neck pain are affecting your work, sleep, or daily life
  • You’ve had frequent headaches you haven’t properly gotten to the bottom of
  • You notice neck stiffness alongside your headaches
  • You’ve tried medication but want to understand if there’s a physical contributing factor
  • You’re open to a thorough assessment and honest conversation about next steps

βœ— We may not be the right fit if…

  • You have been advised not to have manual therapy to your head or neck
  • Your headaches include fainting episodes, undiagnosed vertigo or black outs (see a GP first!)
  • You need emergency medical or surgical care (we’ll refer you if so)

Not sure? That’s completely fine. Feel free to call us to discuss, and we’ll help you work out whether this is the right approach for your situation.

⚠️ Important: Please see a doctor or go to your nearest Emergency Department if you experience a sudden, severe headache unlike any you’ve had before, a headache with neurological symptoms (vision changes, weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking), or neck pain with fever and light sensitivity. These symptoms require urgent medical attention and are outside the scope of osteopathic practice.

Honest Answers to the Things
People Actually Ask

No. You can book directly as a new patient without any GP referral. If you want to use a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan, you’ll need a GP referral for that specifically – but you can absolutely start without one. Most private health insurance extras cover osteopathy without a referral too.
Your initial consultation is 60 minutes. This gives us time to take a full case history, conduct a thorough physical assessment, explain what we find, and discuss the most sensible next steps for your situation – without feeling rushed.
Honestly – it depends. Migraine is a complex neurological condition, and we’re clear about the limits of what osteopathy can do. What we can assess is whether neck stiffness, muscle tension, or postural factors are contributing to your migraine pattern. Some people with migraine do notice improvement when these physical contributors are addressed. We won’t promise results, but we will be upfront with you about what we find and whether we think this approach is likely to be helpful in your case.
It genuinely varies – and we’ll give you an honest estimate after your first appointment, not a pre-packaged course of treatment. It depends on how long you’ve had the problem, what’s driving it, and how your body responds. Many people with neck-related headaches notice meaningful improvement within 3–6 sessions. Some need more. We reassess as we go, and we’ll tell you if we think you’re not progressing as expected.
Yes – most private health insurance extras policies include osteopathy. The rebate amount depends on your level of cover. You’ll receive your rebate on the spot via HICAPS at our clinic, so you only pay the gap. Call your insurer to confirm your specific cover if you’re unsure.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows movement. We’ll be assessing your neck, upper back, and posture, so something you can move freely in is ideal. You don’t need to bring anything special for your first visit.
We’ll tell you – and we’ll point you in the right direction. If after assessing you we think you’d be better served by a GP, neurologist, physiotherapist, or another health professional, we’ll say so clearly and help with a referral where appropriate. We’d rather you get the right help than continue with sessions that aren’t the best fit.
Yes – street parking is available nearby. Visit our main website for specific clinic location and parking details for each of our locations.

If You’ve Been Putting Up With Headaches or Neck Pain,
It Might Be Worth Getting It Properly Assessed.

Not every headache has a simple answer – but many do. A thorough assessment is a sensible first step, and it only takes 60 minutes. No referral, no waiting weeks to be seen.
